Gabriela Nguyen

Tech Skeptic
Gabriela Nguyen is the 24-year-old founder of Appstinence, a global social movement challenging the fundamental assumption that we need social media to stay connected. Rather than promoting temporary digital detoxes or self-control strategies, Appstinence advocates for something more radical: complete liberation from personal social media accounts in favor of direct human communication through calling and texting.

As a Gen Z native to Silicon Valley, Gabriela lived the contradiction of her generation—chronically online for ten years while growing increasingly disconnected from authentic relationships and mental clarity. Her personal transformation from digital dependency to what she calls being “appstinent” revealed profound benefits that traditional approaches to social media wellness had failed to deliver.

This breakthrough led Gabriela to develop the 5D Method, a systematic approach that empowers anyone to quit social media permanently rather than cycling through endless attempts at moderation. What began as a personal solution while she was a student at Harvard has evolved into a movement that spans every continent except Antarctica, uniting five generations from Gen Z to Boomers across all walks of life—college students to comedians, parents to professors.

Appstinence represents more than digital wellness; it’s a return to intentional living and genuine human connection in an age of artificial engagement. Gabriela’s work challenges us to reconsider whether the tools designed to connect us are actually driving us apart, and whether true freedom might lie not in managing our relationship with social media, but in choosing to step away entirely.

Her insights and movement have captured global attention, with features in The New York Times, Business Insider, WIRED, Newsweek, and Harvard Ed. Gabriela continues to lead a growing community of people who believe that our most meaningful connections happen not through screens, but through the irreplaceable power of direct human interaction.
